Produced by the prestigious winemaker Mariano García, Aalto PS is made from a selection of the best Tinta Fina grapes coming from 80 to 100 year-old vineyards located in the province of Burgos.
The grapes of this Spanish red wine were harvested by hand and transported to the winery in very small boxes during hours of low light to prevent any undesirable pre-fermentation. These selected grapes were put through another selection process at the winery before being destemmed. The grape musts from each vineyard were processed through separate processes of vinification before the final blend was realized.
The fermentation of Aalto PS 2017, produced by Aalto Bodegas y Viñedos, was carried out at a controlled temperature. Then this red wine from Ribera del Duero was drawn off and transferred into French oak barrels, 50% new, where it completed malolactic fermentation and was aged for a period of 19 months.
Clarified using egg whites, Aalto Pagos Seleccionados from Ribera del Duero was bottled unfiltered in July 2019.
We emphatically suggest that you decant it for a minimum of 2 hours before you drink it.
The winery recommends to consume the wine at least one year after its bottling. From the third year on, it will begin to develop the sort of complexity that has put it in the scarce list of world-class red wines produced in Spain.
Appearance | The wine Aalto PS has a high, intense cherry-coloured robe with a reddish hue at the rim. |

Nose | This imposing reserve red wine from Ribera del Duero is harmonious, well-balanced and really deep. Intense notes of toast, liquorice, and red fruit (blackberries, plums, redcurrants, and cherries), with nuanced lactic notes, and refreshing notes that are reminiscent of After Eight. The background of this Tinta Fina (a.k.a. Tempranillo) suggests some earthy notes of wet soil and balsamic hints. The aromatic richness is truly sensational. |
Palate | Full, round and very elegant, Aalto Ps is crafted with the utmost precision by Mariano García. This is definitely an addicting wine by Bodegas Aalto. The mouth is silky, well-structured and prodigiously textured. Fruit is pristine, wonderfully ripe and very expressive, and it is nuanced by rich nuances of spices, flowers, earth and mineral. There are polished, tasty tannins that coat the palate. Very persistent and complex, and with plenty of room for growth. Unending, compelling finish. |
Our personal opinion | A majestic wine, Aalto PS 2017 is nevertheless still in its childhood. A jewel that really deserves your patience. |

A future world Champ. Spellbinding opulence and richness which needs a minimum of 8 years to show what it is capable of.
One of Spain's top reds, up there with some truly great Bordeaux.
A pricy wine for sure, but I think it's worth the money. Furthermore, having drunk some older vintages I have to say that this ages exceptionally well.
