After a 15-year-long period and countless tries, Bodegas Abadal finally released its long-awaited Abadal Mandó, a single varietal Spanish red wine made solely from an extremely interesting and characterful grape variety indigenous to Pla de Bages. This is the second vintage of the wine.
Once the most widely planted variety in that tiny Designation of Origin located at the heart of Catalonia, the Mandó vineyards were progressively abandoned during the first decades of the XXth century due to socioeconomic factors.
Fortunately, though, some years ago the Roqueta family, current owner of the Abadal winery, spotted some old Mandó vines and decided to make them productive again.
A slow, late-ripening variety with a distinctively floral character and a great capacity to reflect the nuances of the terroir, the Mandó variety is anything but a fruit bomb. This fact alone puts it in an entirely different category in relation to most Mediterranean varieties.
Harvested by hand and selected on site and in the cellar, Abadal Mandó 2016 was traditionally vinified and subsequently aged for 12 months, 40% in oak barrels and the rest in clay amphorae. After that, this Crianza red wine was bottled and aged for some time before its release.
Aerate this red wine from Pla de Bages 30 minutes before serving. Drink over the next 4 years.
Only 3,800 bottles produced.
The red wine Abadal Mandó has a bright, cherry coloured robe with a garnet rim.
Right from the start, this Mandó by Abadal wine opens entirely new vistas for us, wine drinkers accostumed to the aromatic profile of Mediterranean wines. A distinctive background of liquorice, with some delightful tips of violets and blue flowers, alongside rich suggestions of aromatic herbs and Mediterranean forest. The red fruit is also present, but only as a distant, subdued echo. Are we still in Catalonia, or have we inadvertently travelled to Burgundy?
Light and lithe, with a strikingly original watery note, this red wine by Abadal has a superb acidity and an excellent balance. Again, the fruit is understated, and the wine is all about herbs, earth and flowers. Long, balsamic finish that leaves a dreamy feeling.
|Our personal opinion||
The successful culmination of a long project to bring back an exceedingly interesting grape variety, Abadal Mandó 2016 is a wine which should be known by each and every serious wine aficionado.
