Here is the new vintage of Belondrade y Lurton, one of the most prestigious Spanish white wines.
A single varietal Verdejo, this white wine fermented and aged on lees is made from over 30-year-old vineyards located at an altitude of 750 metres above sea level.
The organically grown vines grow in soils composed of sand and pebble stones that bring a distinctive freshness and complexity to the wine.
The 2017 vintage was a difficult one, which lead to the earliest harvest in the history of the DO Rueda. As usual, each plot was separately harvested and vinified. First, the grapes were cold-soaked and spontaneously fermented with their own yeasts in 300-litre French oak barrels.
After that, 15% of this single varietal Verdejo from Rueda underwent malolactic fermentation.
Then Belondrade y Lurton 2017 was blended and aged on its lees in the barrels for 10 months with periodic stirrings.
Finally, this wine of the Belondrade winery was aged for a further 6 months in the cellar prior to its release.
An age-worthy white wine, it will improve in the bottle for 10 years. Production around 85,000 bottles.
Decant 1 hour before drinking.

Nose | This is an intense, suggestive Verdejo from Rueda by Didier Belondrade. Notes of toast, spices and balsam, alongside aromas of white fruit, citrus, hay, bitter herbs and flowers over a subtle, exquisite, distinctive mineral background which is the mark of a great terroir. |
Palate | Bold and palate-coating, this Verdejo white wine by the Belondrade winery shows a tight, concentrated complexity that will slowly unfurl over the next years. Full of richness and nuance, showing notes of tropical fruit, pomelo, bitter herbs, dry earth and white flowers. Great acidity and long, delicately bitter finish. |
Our personal opinion | An exquisitely crafted wine from Rueda, the classy Belondrade y Lurton 2017 captures like few others the enormous personality of the Verdejo grape. |

I drank this at a Castilian restaurant with a roast suckling pig. A match made in heaven. The wine is dense, tangy and delicately bitter. I've had quite a lot of bottles since that day.
One of Spain's great white wines, and a very good wine to age for some years too. It stands comparison with many first-class white wines around the world.
