This is a quite special Spanish white wine coming from L'Empordà, in northern Catalonia, just near the French border.
The wine Blanc dels Aspres is made from over 40-year-old vines grown in shallow soils composed of granite and slate and with very low levels of organic matter.
The area is constantly swept by a harsh northern wind, called Tramuntana, which operates as a natural sanitizer.
The composition ot this white wine from L'Empordà is an outstandingly intersting one. It is blend of 60% White Grenache and 40% Grey Grenache. Known as Lledoner Roig in the region, the variety was vinified in white in order not to colour the resulting wine.
Produced by Vinyes dels Aspres, after the harvest the grapes were destemmed and crushed. Then, the free-run juice was fermented in Allier oak barrels.
After that, this Crianza white wine was aged for 5 months on its lees, with pump-overs performed every 15 days.
With a production around 11,000 bottles, all numbered, we suggest that you decant Blanc dels Aspres 2016 1 hour before drinking.
Drink until 2024.
The white wine Blanc dels Aspres has a very bright, clean pale yellow colour with some golden and steely tinges.
This blend of White Grenache and Grey Grenache from L'Empordà is remarkably complex, showing notes of flowers, orange blossom, passion fruit, red fruit, ripe tomato, pastry, dry fruit and citrus over a deep mineral background.
Meaty and rich, though still coming together. This white wine by Vinyes dels Aspres has a lot to offer, and it will improve considerably over the next years. Mineral nuances, remembrances of earth and flowers, notes of citrus, berries and dry fruit and some buttery notes. Crisp acidity and long, kaleidoscopic finish.

Elegant, bold, rewardingly different, Blanc dels Aspres 2016 is somewhat reminiscent of the great white wines from Cotes du Rhône, though it shows an even deeper, earthier side.

This white wine drinks like a red. It has structure, muscle and depth. You feel the sun, but not the heat. Terroir-orientated, also. Superb with white meat.
