This stunning old-vines Grenache comes from two tiny mountainside vineyards composed of slate and quartzite soils. They are planted with one of the oldest Grenache clones in the world, dating back to 1900. Yields per plant are ridiculously low.
Harvested by hand during October and November, alcoholic fermentation of this red wine from Calatayud was carried out in stainless steel tanks of different sizes with indigenous yeasts. After a short maceration, the wine was transferred into half-new 600-litre demi-muids and 500-litre puncheons to complete malolactic fermentation, followed by an ageing period of 22 months. Finally, Brega 2016 was bottled and aged for a further months before its release.
Decant this Grenache from Aragón a minimum of 2 hours before drinking.

Only 3,000 bottles produced.
The red wine Brega has a dark garnet colour with a purple rim.
Impressively deep and amazingly expressive, this old-vines Grenache conveys some of the purest aromas of red fruit one can experience, nuanced by hints of amarena cherries, sweet spices, black pepper and toast, evolving into an ever clearer mineral and earthy note. All in all, Brega is impressively terroir-bound.
Deep, multi-layered and nuanced, this Crianza red wine by Bodega Breca is immensely powerful, but in full command of itself. Still young, right now it feels meaty and palate-coating, and it needs some years to fully come together. Superb fruit, with some wooden notions, and an amazing earthy side. The acidity is sensational, and Brega has a spellbinding finish with some spicy and even floral remembrances.
|Our personal opinion||
It is amazing how a land as harsh as Calatayud can produce a wine as intoxicating as Brega 2016 by Jorge Ordóñez. Absolutely first-class.
