The rare and famed Contino Viña del Olivo is a high-end Spanish red wine made from grapes coming exclusively from El Olivo estate.
First, the grapes were destemmed and fermented in 10,000-litre oak vats at a temperature between 25 and 28ºC for 17 days.
Then this reserve red wine from La Rioja was drawn-off and transferred into new French oak barrels, where it completed malolactic fermentation.
After that, a portion of the wine was aged in those same barrels, another 20% was aged in American oak barrels, and the rest in Hungarian oak barrels. All were aged for 18 months.
Finally, Contino Viña del Olivo 2016 was aged for some time in the bottle before its release.
Drink this red wine from La Rioja over the next 8-10 years. Decant 30 minutes before drinking.
The red wine Contino Viña del Olivo has a high, red-coloured robe with some maroon tinges.
Very pure, this embodiment of classic Rioja made from Tempranillo and Graciano already begins with a deep mineral layer, over which some toasted and spicy notions combine with a strong remembrance of liquorice, finally giving way to some subdued aromas of bramble fruit, chocolate and aromatic herbs.
Quite young, though already exhibiting finesse and poise, this reserve red wine by Contino is zippy and fresh, with wild berries, some deep mineral remembrances, many spicy notes and a long, pleasant finish.
|Our personal opinion||
An absolute classic, Contino Viña del Olivo 2016 is the embodiment of good old Rioja. Bear in mind that the wine needs some years to fully come together.

How come that they release this so early? I'd have preferred to buy it after 5 years in the bottle. Anyway, it is still a great wine, perfect to store for 10-15 years in a good home cellar.
Rioja aristocracy. It deserves much praise and respect.
