Details

It is fair to say that 4 Kilos Vinícola, the producer of this Spanish red wine, is the most interesting wine company currently operating in beautiful Mallorca.

Totally confident about the quality and potential of Majorca's native varieties, the 2018 vintage of 4 kilos is, again, a varietal Callet, arguably Mallorca's noblest red variety. The grapes come from vines 20 to 50 years old grown in three different estates cooled by sea breezes. Soils are very rich in ferric oxide, a feature that gives the earth an idiosyncratic reddish colour.

Harvested by hand, carefully selected and destemmed, 50% of the grapes were fermented in stainless steel tanks, and the other 50% in 2,500-litre wooden vats. Malolactic fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks and 600-litre oak barrels. After that, the different parts were blended and aged in 600-litre French oak barrels from Allier for a period of 12 months.

To enjoy it at its fullest, this age-worthy red wine from Mallorca should be decanted 1 hour before drinking.

As usual, the packaging of this organic red wine is as exquisite as its content. 4 kilos 2018 features a stunning photography by Albarrán Cabrera.

Appearance

The red wine 4 Kilos has a bright, dark, high cherry-coloured robe with a purple rim.

Nose

This varietal Callet has a remarkably original aromatic profile, with well-balanced notes of juicy black fruit, pomegranate, Mediterranean herbs, dry earth, liquorice, carob and spices. This organic red wine has a background of licorice, coffee and fennel.

Palate

Cherries and redcurrants dominate the palate of this red wine from Mallorca, along with balsamic notes, mineral undertones, earthy sensations and some salty remembrances. Produced by Bodega 4 Kilos Vinícola, this wine is subtle and richly layered, with a fine texture that leaves a smooth, suave sensation. Tannins are crunchy, and acidity is solid and crisp. Long, fruity finish and great overall elegance.

Our personal opinion

The excellent 4 Kilos 2018, probably the best vintage to date, shows that the wines from Mallorca have definitely come of age. The island has everything to become a sort of Mediterranean Burgundy: terroir, climate and grapes.

The 2016 is the best vintage so far, no question about it. I think this defines a paradigm of what Majorcan wines should be. Deeply Mediterranean, and also supremely elegant.

A refined wine with a character very much of its own. I'm glad that Majorcan wines are starting to develop a definite identity.

Absolutely lovely wine, it keeps getting better with each vintage. The winemakers have really fine-tuned it and now it is the best wine from Mallorca. No question about it.

The best wine from Mallorca? This Callet grape has a very original profile, fresh, linear and nicely textured. This wine reminds me of some great Italian reds.
