Algueira Brancellao 2010
The northern Spanish region of Galicia has a wealth of indigenous grapes like no other region in Spain. This Algueira Brancellao 2010, crafted by the Algueira winery in the Ribeira Sacra, bears the name of one of them, the Brancellao grape. Though it once was one of the hegemonic grapes in the region, the filoxera plague that ravaged the European vineyard at the end of the nineteenth century brought the grape nearly to extinction.
Rare and scarcely planted, today there are very few wines produced solely from Brancellao. This is why this Algueira Brancellao 2010 is a truly singular wine.
Harvested by hand at dusk not to expose the fruit to excessive heat, the grapes were crushed by foot and cold-soaked at a temperature of 10 ºC. Then they were fermented in conical trunk vats with indigenous yeasts and aged for 11 months in French oak barrels.
A wine for adventurous drinkers.
90 Parker points.
|Appearance||Subtle cherry colour with garnet tinges and a ruby hue at the rim.|
Misterious, evocative nose that displays red fruit, spices, balsam, hints of menthol, wet herbs, and mineral notes from the slate soils the wine was grown in.
A continental wine, light and deep on the palate, full of freshness and mistery. An overall forest-like feeling consisting of red berries, aromatic herbs, balsamic notes and an intense mineral background. Silky texture and a lingering, wet-earth aftertaste.
