Details

The interesting Cair Cuvée is the entry-level Spanish red wine of Dominio de Cair, the Ribera del Duero project of the well known Luis Cañas winery from Rioja.

It is made from grapes coming from the youngest vines of the winery (20-25 years). As for the composition, this Ribera del Duero red wine is made from a blend of 85% Tempranillo and 15% Merlot. Interestingly, the Merlot vineyard is located at an altitude of 950 metres above sea level, a key factor in allowing the grapes to ripen steadily and slowly.

The grapes were destemmed, fermented in stainless steel tanks and then transferred into new, one and two-year-old French (60%) and American (40%) oak barrels, where the wine stayed for 9 months. The Tempranillo was aged in 2nd and 3rd year barrels, while the Merlot was aged in new ones.

Prior to its release, Cair Cuvée 2017 slept about 6 months in the cellar before its release.

Appearance

The Spanish red wine Cair Cuvée shows an intense and bright cherry color with violet glints.

Nose

Very suggestive, with some complexity. This blend of Tempranillo and Merlot begins with some aromas of mulberries and blackberries, nuanced by notes of clay and graphite. On the background there appear some sweet spices, and some lactic and toffee remembrances, underpinned by a subtle smoky background.

Palate

A very tasty red wine, this Ribera del Duero by Luis Cañas has a crisp, uplifting acidity and a stimulating passage through the palate. This wine by Dominio de Cair is wonderfully drinkable, but not trivial at all.

Our personal opinion

Remarkably fresh, Cair Cuvée 2017 pairs particularly well with hearty dishes thanks to its excellent acidity. A nice red from Ribera del Duero.

Very good everyday Ribera. Smooth and not too oaky.

This wine has some jammy, delicately sweet, ripe red fruit and very nice tannins, not harsh. Good buy.
