Product Description

This is the new vintage of Clio, one of Jumilla's best wines. A difficult year, 2016 was one of the earliest vintages in the history of the region. The grapes arrived at the cellar fully ripen, but the overall production was significantly below average.

The wine is produced by Bodegas El Nido from a blend of old, almost centenary Monastrell vines and a lesser part of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As always, this Spanish red wine was crafted by the prestigious Australian winemaker Chris Ringland, from Barossa Valley.

Macerated and fermented partly in stainless steel tanks and partly in oak barrels, this red wine from Jumilla was then transferred into new American and French oak barrels, where it completed malolactic fermentation and was aged for over a period of 24 months.

We strongly suggest that you decant Clio 2017 about 2 hours before you drink it.

This is one of Spain's most prestigious and highly-rated wines.

The wine Clio from Jumilla has a bright, cherry-coloured robe with a garnet rim.


A friendly explosion of red and black fruit in all their forms, from fresh to marmalade-ish. This blend of Monastrell and Cabernet Sauvignon is also reminiscent of caramel and toffee, with some gentle hints of toast, cocoa, Havanna cigars and coffee. On the background, some earthy and mineral nuances. Well-balanced and compelling nose.


Huge, powerful and savoury, and it also shows a distinctive elegance and a masterly touch on the part of the winemaker. Fruit and freshness dominate the picture, complemented with exotic touches of spices, violets, some vegetal nuances, some toasted notes, and deep mineral undertones. This wine by Bodegas El Nido has a tremendous acidity, some ripe tannins and very long, fruity finish.

Our personal opinion

Rightly bearing a Greek Muse name, Clio 2017 is an exceptional, truly inspiring red wine. Drink now or store for a decade.

An immensely powerful wine, still in the making. Anyhow, it is already a pleasure.

Ringland and his team have begun to reduce the oak ageing period of Clio. It is a good decision, and I must say tha the wine greatly benefits from it. It still is a big and imposing wine, but the fruit and the terroir are now less suffocated. This will probably peak in 5-7 years.
