Product Description
Details

Produced by Mas den Gil, Coma Vella is named after a vineyard, Coma Vella, planted with two types of Grenache: the well-known Red Grenache, and the rare Hairy Grenache. Those two varieties account for 70% of the blend of this Spanish red wine

As for the other 30%, it is divided among the Carignan and Syrah varieties. All of them are planted in the typical Priorat llicorella (slate) soils.

The grapes were picked by hand, and each variety was separately vinified. Maceration and alcoholic fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks and concrete tanks for a period of 10 days.

After that, the wine was transferred in oak barrels of different sizes, where it was aged for 14 months. Then Coma Vella 2017 was bottled and aged for a further 24 months before its commercial release.

It is advisable to decant this Reserva red wine at the very least 30 minutes before drinking.

Pair this Priorat red wine with casseroles, oily fish dishes and hearty meat recipes.

Appearance

The red wine Coma Vella is medium purple with a clean ruby rim.

Nose

This blend of Grenache, Hairy Grenache, Carignan and Syrah is as enticing as its composition suggests. Subtle aromas of cranberries and blackberries, with subdued notes of graphite and wet stones, a fleck of violets and rose petals, and some dim herbal and spicy remembrances. There is even a tip of Havanna cigars.

Palate

Mature and well-defined, this wine of Mas d'en Gil shows the sort of calm confidence which is rarely encountered today. Here everything is just in the right place. Tannins are ripe, acidity is firm, and texture is nuanced and moreish. Long finish, with an aftertaste of ripe red fruit and herbs, and a mineral/metallic note.

Our personal opinion

While remaining faithful to the rugged Priorat terroir, Coma Vella 2017 is, above all, a very elegant wine.
