Product Description

The Dominio Dos Tares winery was founded with the aim of recuperating an exceptional, yet almost unknown native Spanish variety.

A single varietal Prieto Picudo, Cumal is produced in the northern Spanish province of Castilla y León.

This rare Spanish red wine is made from vines which are almost 100 years old. They are located at an altitude of 800 metres above sea level.

Selected twice, the grapes were destemmed and fermented uncrushed using indigenous yeasts for 28 days. Then they were macerated for several weeks with 3 daily pump-overs, transferred into new and used French and American oak barrels, and aged for 12 months.

Finally, this varietal Prieto Picudo was gently filtered before its bottling and aged for a further 12 months before its release.

Decant Cumal 2016 1 hour before drinking.

Additional Information
Additional Information

The red wine Cumal has a deep, bright cherry-coloured robe with a garnet rim.

Somewhat closed at the beginning, as this red wine from Dominio DosTares opens it reveals a very original personality. Gamey and mineral, with a dense layer of wild berries, some spicy and balsamic notes, and a note of violets and dry earth. Complex, yet still packed.

The palate is powerful and, again, totally idiosyncratic. Dense, but neither massive nor overblown, this Prieto Picudo has a serious potential for evolution. Juicy notes of red and black fruit, extremely pure, with a sort of rustic character which feels very authentic. Terroir-bound, this wine from Castilla y León is deeply mineral, with a superb acidity and bold tannins. Long, complex finish.

Our personal opinion

The esoteric Cumal 2016 offers an opportunity of discovering an indigenous Spanish red variety. And an extremely interesting one at that.

Refreshingly "primitive", so to speak. Immensely energetic, with chewy tannins and an earthy side.

Worth trying
This red wine made from an virtually unknown grape is excellent. Pleasantly tannic, vivid, still a little tight, it has a sort of inner thrust that makes it super attractive. Very authentic.
