This Cune Imperial Gran Reserva is one of all-time La Rioja's classics. Interestingly, over the last vintages the winery has progressively reduced the use of oak, thus resulting in an even more fresher, nuanced and elegant Spanish red wine.
This Gran reserve red wine is produced from a blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo, all coming from estate-owned vineyards located in the cooler, higher-altitude zone of La Rioja Alta.
Crafted by the highly respected Cvne winery (acronym of Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España), the grapes of Cune Imperial Gran Reserva 2011 were harvested when they had achieved an optimal ripeness. After a cold-maceration, alcoholic fermentation took place in French and American oak vats, while the malolactic fermentation and the subsequent 24-month ageing period were completed in French and American oak barrels. Finally, the wine was clarified with egg whites and aged for some years in the bottle before its release.
Drink until 2028. Decant 1 hour before drinking.
This superb red wine from Rioja recently got a score of Parker 93+. Besides, it was awarded a Silver Medal in the Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) 2018.
The red wine Cune Imperial Gran Reserva shows a clean, intense, delightfully mature ruby red colour of medium depth with brick red rim.
Elegance, subtlety and mild intensity. This classic blend of Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo from Rioja exhibits a very seductive balance between ripe berry fruits, hints of liquorice and delightful notes of Jamaica pepper. We also find subtle aromas of oak ageing: delicate notes of cinnamon, Tahitian vanilla and a light touch of cedar wood.
Silky palate full of elegance and freshness. Very gently oaked and nicely textured, with velvety tannins, bright acidity and a good persistence. Earthy notes, dark fruit, withered leaves and a long aftertaste which is neither melancholic nor autumnal, but rather uplifting. Furthermore, this Gran reserve red wine by CVNE shows a great ageing potential.
