Details

Made from an indigenous, long-forgotten red variety, Tridente Prieto Picudo is produced in León, the northernmost province of the region of Castilla y León. Though the grape is difficult to grow, it produces wines with a great acidity and a remarkable ageing potential.

Crafted by Bodegas Tridente, the old vines of Prieto Picudo yield less than 1,5 kg. per plant.

Harvested at dawn, the grapes were gently destemmed and macerated in stainless steel tanks at a temperature of 10ºC to extract aromatic and phenolic compounds. Alcoholic fermentation was also carried out at a temperature below 25ºC to preserve varietal aromas. Racked and transferred into French oak barrels, Tridente Prieto Picudo 2018 completed malolactic fermentation and was finally aged for over a period of 15 months.

We strongly recommend that you aerate this Spanish red wine 30 minutes before you drink it.

Appearance

The red wine Tridente Prieto Picudo from Castilla y León has a high, cherry-coloured robe with a purple rim.

Nose

The wines made from Prieto Picudo tend to show an earthy, deep character. This Crianza red wine is no exception. Notes of wet earth and ripe red fruit, along with mineral hints and aromas of roasted coffee, cocoa and toast.

Palate

A muscular, meaty wine that displays notes of ripe fruit, exotic spices and hints of bitter chocolate. Firm, mouth-coating tannins and a taut acidity give way to a long, spicy finish with some remembrances of earth and red berries. Wooden notes are present, but not prominent. Overall, the Prieto Picudo produced by Bodegas Tridente has an interesting growing potential.

Our personal opinion

Focused and tight, the acidity of Tridente Prieto Picudo 2018 balances its weight makes it a pleasure to drink. Great pairing with roasted meat recipes.

Value
This prieto variety has a lot of meat and it feels a bit wild. It is not boring, however, and the grip and the acidity are great. Definitely liked it.
