Cebreros

Cebreros

The birthplace of some remarkable Grenache wines from Sierra de Gredos.

Located in the province of Ávila, between the valleys of the Alberche river and the Tiétar river, the DOP Cebreros is a part of Sierra de Gredos, a prestigious wine producing area known for its world-class Grenache wines. An rugged, austere and remote region, the identity of DOP Cebreros is defined by its granitic soils and the abundance of old vines, some of which are planted at an altitude above 1,000 metres. Also an important factor, the climate is a combination of Continental and Mediterranean, characterized by bitterly cold winters with frequent snowfalls and dry and hot summers.

The first written reference to the quality of the wines from Cebreros dates back to the XIVth century. As it happened in other parts of Spain, the region was devastated by the phylloxera plague at the beginning of the XXth century. Because of rural depopulation, the recovery of the vineyards did not gain significant momentum until mid 1970s. Thanks to a group of passionate winemakers who saw the huge potential of the region, from than moment on things progressed slowly but steadily. The efforts finally paid off in 2017, when the Denominación de Origen Protegida Cebreros (DOP Cebreros) was legally approved by the Spanish government.

The main variety of DOP Cebreros is Grenache, which in the region reaches a level of quality that is comparable to the world’s best Grenache wines. The internationally renowned Garnachas de Gredos coming from Cebreros greatly benefit from the acidic soils, typically composed of granite, the high- altitude vineyards and the demanding climate. These factors result in characteristic red wines of great natural concentration, a high ABV and a good ageing potential, which become more expressive and refined as years go by. The flagship white variety is Albillo Real, which produces fresh, vibrant and compellingly mineral wines that can be aged in oak barrels.

The DOP Cebreros covers an area of 1,660 hectares, of which almost 500 hectares are planted with vines, in turn divided into over 1,000 parcels. Currently, there are 22 wineries registered in the regulatory board, most of them young projects that point to an exciting future for the region.
