Castro Ventosa

Castro Ventosa

Since 1752, the Castro Ventosa winery has been crafting some of the best Mencía wines in the world.

The Castro Ventosa family began producing wine in the town of Valtuille de Abajo, in the Bierzo D.O. of Spain, in 1752. Today, oenologist Raul Pérez and his family own 60 hectares of grapevines on the hillsides of this town, of which 80% are over 50 years-old

The vineyards of the Castro Ventosa winery vary in altitude. Although some are located at an altitude of 300 meters, most of them are situtated between 530 and 630 meters above sea level. The soils are composed of sand and chalk. Climate is continental with a strong influence from the Atlantic Ocean.

The Castro Ventosa winery is known for its use of state-of-the-art technology and for its meticulous approach to winemaking. All of their grapes are harvested by hand, and aged in French oak barrels once fermentation is completed.

The wines of the Castro Ventosa winery in the Bierzo are all organic wines. The winery´s oenologist, Raúl Peréz, is one of the world's leading winemakers and has been recognised by his peers with numerous honours and awards. Pérez passionately believes in the qualities of the indigenous Mencía grape, and he only crafts his wines from very old grapevines. The Castro Ventosa wines are only produced in limited quantities to ensure their very high quality.
