Caves Colet

Caves Colet

Since 1783 the Colet family has crafted elegant and traditional artesian cavas in small batches at their cozy family winery.

The Colet family of the Caves Colet winery has been crafting sparkling wines and cavas since 1783. Today, Josep and Sergi Colet carefully maintain this winery´s vineyards in the Sant Martí Sarroca and Pacs regions of Penedès. This winery and its vineyards are inside Alt Penedès, in the province of Barcelona, Spain. This is one of the smallest wineries of Penedès and the entire production process for each cava is very personal. This winery cultivates their own grapes in a fully organic and sustainable manner. These beautiful vineyards are naturally protected by the Mediterranean forest and olive trees that surround them. The grapevines themselves have northeastern orientations on sloping soils. The climate provides for perfect grape cultivation with significant temperature variations between the days and nights which concentrates the grapes aromatics and allows for the production of very fresh wines.

The elaboration of the traditional cavas by Caves Colet is very limited and of an extraordinarily high quality. This winery uses the single varietal or coupage of Chardonnay, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Moscatel (Muscat), Parellada, and Xarel·lo grapes. This winery also cultivates the red grape varietals Pinot Noir and Merlot for their single varietal rosé wines.

One well-known cava of the Caves Colet winery is Assamblage. This cava is crafted from a traditional French Champagne coupage of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and it is aged for 30 months in Rima in the dark underground caves of Caves Colet.

Some years ago, Colet started a joint venture with the famed Adalusian winery Equipo Navazos, one of the main instigators of the current Sherry renaissance. Currently they produce some remarkably original sparkling wine whose shipping liquor comes from Palos Cortados and Manzanillas aged for years by the soleras and criaderas system.

In 2015, the Colet winery left the Cava DO and joined the Clàssic Penedès DO. As required by the status of the new Designation of Origin, all of the sparkling wines produced by Colet are made from organically grown grapes, have been aged a minium of 15 months before its release and have its disgorginf date printed on the label.

Speaking of Wine tourism, the Colet winery belongs to La Carretera del Vi (The wine road), a tourist itinerary that follows the old route of the grapes, from the hearts of Penedès to the Garrraf coast on the Mediterranean Sea.
