Celler Bàrbara Forés

Celler Bàrbara Forés

The Celler Bàrbara Forés winery presents one of the most pure expressions of the grand winemaking tradition of the Terra Alta.

The Celler Bàrbara Forés in Gandesa was founded in the early 20th century when the great grandfather of the current owner, the son of  Bàrbara Forés, had a modern architect in Tarragona construct this winery´s facilities. This architect was Ramón Salas i Ricomá, who help with the bottling of the first wine that left this winery in the early 1900s.

In 1994 the present day owner of this winery, Carmen Ferrer Escoda and her husband Manual Sanmartin Suñer, decided to embark on this vinification venture crafting quality wines in the area with modern technology. By this regard these new owners sponsored the implementation of new machinery along with some adaptations to their winery´s physical structure to incorporate new technologies, all the while following their family´s philosophy and tradition of wine making. Ms. Escoda was once quoted explaining that in her opinion the winery was far too big to be a too small to be a winery. Ms. Escoda made this remark because the winery started with the production of 5,000 bottles which was far under their demand. Today this winery exceeds 50,000 bottles of wine with each harvest.

The micro-climate at these vineyards is Mediterranean with a continental influence. This winery is influenced by the Garbí winds in the region that rolls up the Ebro River, cooling the vineyards along its way. This wind also bring beneficial moisture to the grapevines. This is especially useful after warm days with no or little humidity. Furthermore, the rainfall in this region is scarce with less than 500 liters (130 US gallons) per year.

The Bàrbara Forés vineyards are located inside of Gandesa, in different plots that amas 19 hectares of grapevines in total. These grapevines are situated in calcareous soils that are full of sand allowing for a strong capacity to retain water, as well as to drain water depending on the weather conditions. This winery has Grenache grapevines that exceed 50 years of age. This winery also works with old Viognier, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah grapevines with the majority of their grapevines being Grenache Noir and Carignan. This winery is also working hard to recuperate the Morenillo grape varietal, which is a very rare grape that is nearly extinct in this region.

All of the grapes utilized by the Bàrbara Forés winery in Tarragona are always harvested in small quantities by the grape cultivators. These grapes are then delivered to the winery where they receive a personal vinification in small batches separated according to the grape varietal. Currently, this winery is crafting seven different vintages of wine. One unique vintage is an oaked red wine which is crianza aged underneath the winery. All of this winery´s oak barrels are from Allier, France.
