Torre de Oña

Torre de Oña

A brand of Grupo La Rioja Alta, Torre de Oña produces solid Tempranillo wines in La Rioja

In 1985, Don Leandro Vázquez, a Cuban-born businessman, fulfilled his long-held dream of creating his own winery. First, he bought 15 hectares of vineyards in Páganos, Álava. Two years later, he began building the winemaking facilities, and in 1989 he built the magnificent country house where the wine tourism services of Torre de Oña are currently located.

The first wine of Torre de Oña winery was released in 1992. In 1995, Mr. Vázquez sold the estate, 45 hectares in total, to Grupo La Rioja Alta. In 2003, the new owners refurbished and upgraded the old facilities, equipping them with cutting-edge winemaking technology.

Since its creation, Bodega Torre de Oña was conceived, along the lines of French Châteaux, as a self-sufficient producing entity. In 2005, the company went a step further, setting in motion a thorough study of its soils, in order to determine the specific characteristics of each site and thus fine-tune its production methods. The Tempranillo variety, La Rioja's flagship grape, is the backbone of all of the wines from Torre de Oña.

Besides Torre de Oña, grupo La Rioja Alta also is also the owner of several other wineries. In La Rioja, Bodega La Rioja Alta, the mother company. In Rías Baixas, bodega Lagar de Fornelos. Finally, Viñedos y Bodegas Áster from Ribera del Duero.
