Venta d'Aubert

Venta d'Aubert

After languishing for decades, the Venta d'Aubert estate was brought back to life by a Swiss couple

The history of Venta d'Aubert goes back to the XIXth century, when the word “Venta” described a building which was both an inn, and a relay station where tired horses could be exchanged by fresh ones. Located on the historic trail which connected Tortosa and Zaragoza, first the advent of railroad transportion, and then the spread of motor vehicles dramatically affected mobility habits. Thus, the area became increasingly depopulated, as a result of which the Venta d'Aubert estate was abandoned.

In the last third of the XXth Century, a Swiss couple enamoured of the Somontano landscape discovered the site. All that was left from what had once been a thriving estate was a White Grenache vineyard, and some plots of olive trees and almond trees. Undaunted, the couple decided to give new life to the place, and in 1986 they planted new vineyards aimed at producing red and white wines. The winemaking facilities were built in 1995. In 2001, they were upgraded with state-of-the-art technology to ensure the highest production quality.

Located in the town of Cretas (Teruel), an area belonging to the designation VT Bajo Aragón, on the Valderrobres road, the Venta d'Aubert estate comprises 62 hectares, 18 of which are planted with vineyards. The winery obtained its organic certification in 2013, but it has been following the principles of organic farming for more than 15 years. A few years ago it also began to explore biodynamic techniques, like the use of animal manure and vegetal compost to regenerate the soil.

The 18 hectares of vineyards of the Venta d'Aubert winery include both local and international varieties. The red varieties are Grenache, Monastrell, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, and Merlot. The white ones are White Grenache, Chardonnay and Viognier. Planted in clay-limestone soils, the non-irrigated vines grow under a Mediterranean and Semi-Continental climate. Excellent conditions, in short, for producing quality wines.

The organic wines of bodega Venta d'Aubert are crafted following meticulous attention to detail through the whole producing process, from vine to bottle. Terroir-bound, they proudly show the traditional character of Somontano. The winery has 500 oak barrels, where the wines are usually aged for variable periods of time. Generally speaking, the red wines are deep and full-bodied. The white wines are very aromatic.
