Details

This is the top shelf Spanish red wine of Bodegas López Cristobal from DO Ribera del Duero.

A varietal Tinta del País (aka Tempranillo), Bagús is produced from grapes coming from Pago Manvirgo, a single vineyard with calcareous sitting at 850 metres of altitude and planted with 85-year-old vines.

Because of the uncompromising quality standards of the winery, this "Vino de Pago" (single vineyard wine) is only produced in exceptional vintages.

The grapes were harvested and meticulously selected in the cellar. Once the vinification process was completed, Bagús 2019 was aged for 14 months in new 80% French and 20% American oak barrels.

Finally, this Crianza red wine was aged for a further 18 months in the cellar prior to its commercial release.

Decant 1 hour before drinking.

8,000 bottles produced.

Appearance

The wine Bagús is deep ruby with a purplish rim.

Nose

This varietal Tinta del País is remarkably deep and pure. Complex aromas of black fruit, liquorice, clove, cardamom, cedar, chocolate, fine leather and withered leaves, underscored by a mineral and earthy note.

Palate

This bold Vino de Pago (single vineyard wine) from Bodegas López Cristóbal still shows some rough edges that will mellow within a few years. This is an age-worthy wine, with an exceptional acidity, mighty tannins and a tremendous richness and complexity that only needs some time to settle. Very long finish, with remembrances of balsam, blackcurrants, charcoal, cocoa and spices.

Our personal opinion

The remarkable Bagús 2019 certainly deserves the attention of serious wine lovers. Great ageing potential.

Top-notch, little-known Ribera. Earthy, grainy, wonderfully tight, no fat at all. Profound.

Little-known producer - for me at least. However, I was very impressed with this wine. The old vines bring layers of depth and authenticity. Winemaking is exquisite.
