Details

One of the four bottlings of the Singularitats d'Orto (Singularities) collection, La Carrerada is produced by the Orto Vins winery, run by the prestigious winemaker Joan Asens.

This remarkable Spanish red wine is made solely from Samsó (a.k.a Carignan) coming from a 0.74-hectare vineyard planted between 1936 and 1956 in the heart of the DO Montsant. The vineyard belongs to Mr. Josep Maria Jové.

Traditionally vinified, after fermenting with native yeasts in barrels, this Crianza red wine completed the malolactic fermentation and a 12-month ageing period in used French oak barrels.

Properly stored, La Carrerada 2020 should evolve nicely in the bottle.

This is a rare and precious red wine from Montsant. Less than 1,000 bottles produced!.

Decant at least 1 hour before drinking.

Appearance

The red wine La Carrerada is medium purple with some garnet reflections.

Nose

Subtle and nuanced, this varietal Samsó carries complex notes of cherries and wild strawberries, alongside some hints of candied fruit, raw cocoa, liquorice, tobacco and spices, with an endearing mineral background.

Palate

Expressive and well-balanced, this red wine of bodega Orto Vins is crisp and lively, with amazing tension but no stifness whatsoever. Deep and complex, with firm tannins and a superb acidity, this is all about terroir and a minerality which combines hints of chalk and liquorice. Very persistent, this Carignan red wine finishes with an uplifting, sensual note.

Our personal opinion

Exquisitely precise and as terroir-driven as it gets, La Carrerada 2020 is a gem from Montsant.

I am a carinena buff, and I am particularly fond of Priorat carinena. I decided to give this highe-end Car. a try and I was not disappointed. This is a wine of great purity and subtlety.

Winemaker Joan Asens has scored a big hit with this pure carinena. It is as deep as those from Priorat but fresher and leaner. Super pure and expressive.
