Product Description
Details

Besides its legendary reds, La Rioja produces some exceptional white wines, like Marqués de Murrieta Capellanía.

This age-worthy Spanish white wine is made from over 70-year-old Viura vineyards located in the highest area of the Ygay estate, Pago Capellanía, at an altitude of 485 metres above sea level.

Manually harvested, the grapes were gently crushed, after which the resulting wine must was drawn off.

Then this white wine from La Rioja produced by Marqués de Murrieta was fermented in concrete diposits under controlled temperature. After that, the wine was aged for 22 months in 225-litre French oak barrels and for a further 7 months in concrete diposits.

Bottled on July 6 2022, Marqués de Murrieta Capellanía 2018 was aged for 12 months in the bottle before its release.

Decant this Reserva red wine 30 minutes before drinking.

21,836 bottles produced.

Appearance

The white wine Marqués de Murrieta Capellanía is deep yellow with some greyish glints.

Nose

Quite rich, this varietal Viura brings aromas of raw almonds, liquor-infused white fruit, cumin, turmeric and citrus, evolving into clove, menthol and toast.

Palate

This white wine from Marqués de Murrieta already shows a remarkable complexity. It is dry and creamy, packed with luscious white fruit and some wooden notions that will need some time to fully integrate. It has a crisp acidity and a long, smooth finish.

Our personal opinion

Rich and classy, Marqués de Murrieta Capellanía 2018 is a Burgundy-style white Rioja with a considerable ageing potential. Pair with a substantial cheese platter, hearty rice recipes, and feathered game dishes.

This is up there with some really great French whites. It has everything: texture, class, terroir, complexity and freshness. Besides, my experience tells me that you can cellar Rioja whites for ages and you almost never encounter any problems of premox, a very serious problem of Burgundy whites.
