Details

A scenic, excepcional 12-hectare vineyard, Finca Garbet is located on one of the spurs of Cap de Creus, the headland that constitutes Spain's easternmost point.

Owned by Castillo de Perelada, the vineyards are planted in terraces composed of slate soils, directly facing the Mediterranean Sea.

Belonging to the DO Empordà, the place is constantly swept by a harsh, dry, unrelenting northern wind called Tramuntana, which is a most effective sanitizing agent. Besides that, it also operates as a natural temperature regulator.

The 2016 vintage of this Spanish red wine is a varietal Syrah, made from vines planted 20 years ago.

Harvested by hand, the grapes were vinified in stainless steel tanks with two daily pump-overs. Fermentation of this Reserva red wine was carried out using indigenous yeasts, and maceration lasted for 30 days.

After that, Perelada Finca Garbet 2016 was aged for 24 months in French oak barrels (Tronçais).

Decant this red wine from L'Empordà a minimum of 1 hour before drinking.

Appearance

The red wine Perelada Finca Garbet has a deep purple with a violet rim.

Nose

This varietal Syrah has an astonishing aromatic complexity. Aromas of red and black fruit combine in the most seductive way with rich suggestions of aromatic herbs and Mediterranean garrigue. The notes of clove, cinnamon and exotic spices provide for a great counterpoint, as well as the poignant mineral undercurrent.

Palate

Bold, complex and voluminous. This wine makes one think of the great Australian reds, though here there is a depth and a terroir-orientated side which is entirely original. The balance between fruit and wood is excellent, and the wine shows a phenomenal potential for improvement. The tannins of this wine from Castillo de Perelada are delicious and finish is spellbinding, with a mineral aftertaste that is like a wonderful picture of the rugged Empordà terroir.

Our personal opinion

Big, deep, age-worthy, Perelada Finca Garbet 2016 is an exquisitely crafted wine.

On a par with some truly big names from Australia. It is not cheap, but if you like the style it is worth it.

I was in serious awe after finishing this wine. The big structure and volume are perfectly complemented with the mark of terroir. Plenty of local character, with an international flair.
