Product Description
Details

This wine is truly amazing. A single varietal Albariño, Do Ferreiro Cepas Vellas is made from pre-phylloxeric vines planted in sandy soils in the Salnés Valley. Incredibly, the vines are over 200 years old.

Harvest of this Spanish white wine from Rías Baixas was carried out manually in little boxes. Interestingly, 10% of the grapes were left in the vineyards so they could develop noble rot, an overripeness that, when appropriately managed, brings an exceptional texture and complexity to the wines.

Once the grapes were brought to the facilities of the Gerardo Méndez winery, they were destemmed and cold-soaked for 12 to 24 hours prior to fermentation.

Fermentation of this Albariño white wine took place in stainless steel tanks using indigenous yeasts.

After that,  Do Ferreiro Cepas Vellas 2018 was aged on its lees for over a period of 12 months.

Drink over the next 10 years.

Appearance

The wine Do Ferreiro Cepas Vellas has a very bright, clean, pale yellor colour with some greenish glints and golden tinges.

Nose

Fabulously expressive, as expected from an Albariño from centenary vineyards. Varietal notes of ripe white fruit, citrus, quince, tropical fruit, white flowers, dim herbaceous notes, some mineral undertones and notions of smoke and cream. Incipient complexity that will surely increase over the next years.

Palate

Creamy, straight and ever-evolving, this white wine by Gerardo Méndez has a lively acidity and an intrincately detailed texture, full of nuance and finesse. Lively notes of bitter herbs, citrus, passion fruit, aniseed and cream. Long, smoky-mineral finish with a remarkable longitude. Impressive ageing potential.

Our personal opinion

One of the best Albariños produced in Spain, Do Ferreiro Cepas Vellas 2018 is an immemorial white wine from Rías Baixas with a radiant future.

Exceptional white wine, period. Bear in mind that this starts to fly after 5 o 6 years, so definitely a wine to store.
