Details

Year after year, the quality standards that the Dominio de Tares winery set from its inception remain uncompromisingly high.

The Mencía grapes used to produce Dominio de Tares Cepas Viejas come from over 60-year-old vines belonging to the DO El Bierzo. They are planted on slopes and terraces at 650 metres above sea level, in clay, limestone and slate soils.

Harvested by hand in 15 kg. boxes, the grapes were selected, destemmed and fermented uncrushed in 10,000 and 20,000-litre vats. The process lasted for more than 3 weeks, with 3 daily pump-overs to foster colour extraction. Then Dominio de Tares Cepas Viejas 2016 was transferred into French and American oak barrels, where it completed malolactic fermentation. Finally, this Spanish red wine was aged for 9-12 months in French oak barrels and further aged for a further 12 months in the bottle.

Aerate this red wine from El Bierzo 30 minutes before drinking.

Appearance

The Spanish red wine Dominio de Tares Cepas Viejas has an attractive, clean, bright, medium-high cherry robe with a reddish rim.

Nose

This elegant Mencía from El Bierzo has a suggestive nose. Blue flowers, touches of red red fruit, wild berries and black fruit, along with delicate touches of spices and toast and, finally, fresh remembrances of menthol, eucalyptus and liquorice.

Palate

Medium-bodied, with a velvety texture that gently coats the palate and evokes notes of vanilla, chocolate, blackberries and mineral undertones. Distant remembrances of toast and balsam, ripe tannins, tense acidity and a long, smoky finish. This Crianza red wine produced by Dominio de Tares is delicious.

Our personal opinion

The wine Dominio de Tares Cepas Viejas 2016 is a quintessential Mencía. A grape that can be as gentle as Pinot Noir and as lively as Tempranillo.

Textbook Mencia, for me the greatest discovery - concerning grape varieties - of the last years. Lots of uncommon information here. Gamey, metallic, floral notes, all together.
