Produced by world-class winemaker Raúl Pérez in collaboration with rising star winemaker César Márquez (who happens to be Mr. Pérez's nephew), El Rapolao, one of the bottlings of the La Vizcaína collection, is a Spanish red wine from El Bierzo.
A blend of Mencía, Bastardo (aka Merenzao and Trousseau) and Garnacha tintorera (aka Alicante Bouschet), the grapes come solely from El Rapolao, a north-oriented "Premier Cru" vineyard with steep slopes planted with vines 40 to 100 years of age.
Picked by hand and meticulously selected, the whole bunches of grapes were spontaneously fermented in open oak vats. After macerating for about 30 days, this Crianza red wine was transferred into 225 and 500 French oak barrels, where it was aged for 12 months. After that, El Rapolao 2020 was bottled unfined.
As terroir-bound as it gets, we suggest that you decant this Crianza red wine from El Bierzo some time before drinking.
Appearance | The red wine El Rapolao is medium ruby with some bright purplish tinges. |

Nose | This blend of Mencía, Bastardo and Garnacha Tintorera is simply marvelous. Cherries and redcurrants, with hints of blood orange, spices, bitter herbs, violets and a bolt of iron. Ever-evolving and utterly compelling. |
Palate | Free-breathing and nimble, but not lacking focus or definition, as is usually the case with the wines of Mr. Raúl Pérez. Crisp acidity, smooth tannins and a very long finish with remembrances of red fruit, mint and flowers, with a metallic note and some spicy and herbal remembrances. |
Our personal opinion | The exquisite El Rapolao 2020, belonging to La Vizcaína collection, proves that Mr. Raúl Peréz's talent is off the charts. |
