Born in the heart of the DO Montsant, Espectacle is one of the absolute best wines produced in Spain. An outstanding old-vines Grenache, it is made from grapes grown in a scenic vineyard that forms a natural amphitheatre.
Interestingly, the Spectacle Vins project is a joint venture of several big players in the region. The soul of the project is René Barbier, creator of Priorat's Clos Mogador. He is accompanied, among other names, by Christopher Cannan, owner of the Clos Figueras winery.
The estate is planted with centenary Grenache vines grown on steep slopes.
Harvested by hand and selected on site and in the cellar, the grapes were first destemmed and gently crushed. Then this Spanish red wine was vinified in a huge, 40 hl French oak vat, and macerated for a long time.
After the completion of malolactic fermentation, which began spontaneously, Espectacle 2018 was aged for 16 months in the vat.
It is crucial to decant to decant this red wine from Montsant at least 2 hours before you drink it.
The red wine Espectacle is bright cherry with a garnet rim a some bluish tinges.
Again, decanting this old-vines Grenache is mandatory. An immense panoply of aromas: ripe black fruit, blood oranges, notes of violets, a dash of bitter chocolate and arabica coffee, garrigue, wet earth, undergrowth, balsam, charcoal, chinese ink and lavender... Rich beyond belief.
This red wine of Spectacle vins is still beginning to assemble its multiple parts, and its best years lie far in the future. Remarkable focus, steely acidity and intricate texture. Endless finish with some deep mineral remembrances and hints of flowers, spices, and wild berries.
