Product Description

A couple of years ago, Celler Gramona released onto the market the new Gramona Enoteca Brut Gran Reserva, one of the most ambitious sparkling wines ever produced in Spain.

The product launch campaign included a series of blind tastings held in some of the best wine bars of Madrid and Barcelona. In those sessions, the new Cava and its no-sugar-added brother, Gramona Enoteca Brut Nature Gran Reserva, competed with some the most legendary French Champagnes to ascertain if they could stand the test of greatness.

The results? Well, without going into the details, let's say that in almost two of the events the Gramona Enoteca series got higher ratings than Champagnes such as Krug, Dom Pérignon and Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame. Further information about the events is easily available on the internet.

The new vintage of this sparkling wine, Gramona Enoteca Brut Gran Reserva 2001 is made from a traditional blend of 75% Xarel·lo and 25% Macabeo coming from Finca La Plana, a 4-hectare estate with soils composed of clay and sand located in Penedès, in the heart of the Cava region. The estate has belonged to the Gramona Family for more than 150 years. Previously, the grapes coming from Finca La Plana were used to produce Gramona III Lustros and Gramona Celler Batlle, the winery's former top sparkling wines.

The 2001 vintage was truly remarkable. Optimal phenolic ripeness and near ideal acid levels paved the way for the creation of a Cava that will certainly grow in the bottle for many years. After an exacting grape selection and a traditional vinification process, was aged for no less than 160 months, that is, about 13 years. After that, the wine was manually clarified, disgorged and, prior to its bottling, added a little dosage -also known as "liqueur d'expédition" or "shipping liquor"- to give it roundness and creaminess.

This high-end Cava, with a lifespan that for now we can only guess, got 94 points from Robert Parker.

Straw yellow colour with steely tinges and a golden-amber hue at the rim.

A nose of superior richness. A first layer of apricot, baked apples, greengage plums, honey and royal jelly is followed by entrancing notes of white flowers, toasted almonds, marzipan, toast and even some hints of undergrowth and mushrooms. Finally, the wine also displays touches of dry fruit, orange rind and some mineral undertones. The best of all, though, is that all this complexity is perfectly harmonious.

Less sharp than the Brut Nature version, Gramona Enoteca Brut Gran Reserva 2001 is simply unbelievable on the palate. The texture is supremely rich and elegant, but at the same time the wine gives the impression of being extremely fresh and young. If one didn't know that this Cava has been aged for 160 months, one would say that it is almost "raw", such is its ageing potential. The bubbles and the liquid are, more than integrated, fused into one single entity. Acidity is phenomenal and finish is never-ending.

Our personal opinion

Gramona Enoteca Gran Reserva Brut 2001 is already extraordinary, and it will probably become a once-in-a-lifetime wine.
