This is a rather special Spanish red wine from El Grillo y la Luna, a winery located in Barbastro, the wine capital of DO Somontano.
A blend of 44% Syrah, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Grenache and 7% Merlot, El Grillo is produced from several plots with different soil compositions, planted at an average height of 400 metres above sea level.
Harvesting was meticulous and was carried out manually. Each vine yielded about 1.2 kg of grapes, which were transported to the cellar in 12 kg boxes. Kept at a temperature of 4ºC to preserve their aromatic compounds and to avoid spontaneous pre-fermentation, the grape bunches were destemmed and put into 40-hectolitre French oak vats. After a cold-soaking process that lasted 5 days, this red wine from Somontano was fermented for over a period of 8 days under strict temperature control and daily punch-downs of the solid cap of grape skins.
Subsequently, Grillo 2014 remained in contact with its lees for 30 days and was transferred into 225 litre French oak barrels, where it completed malolactic fermentation and was aged for a period of 13 months. During the first 5 months, this Spanish red wine was manually stirred twice a day to increase its creaminess and volume. Then the wine was left untouched until bottling.
Aerate this Crianza red wine 1 hour before drinking.
Appearance | The red wine Grillo is high ruby with a purplish rim. |
---|---|
Nose | Deep, opulent aromas of red and black fruit, with some evocative balsamic touches, notes of aromatic herbs and mineral remembrances. Ever-evolving, this blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Merlot also suggests oriental spices, a smell of wet earth and hints of cocoa and coffee. |
Palate | Savoury and inviting, but in a serious, dignified manner. This wine from bodega El Grillo y la Luna is certainly ambitious, but not overblown. Rich and savoury, with a crisp acidity and a smooth, richly-layered texture. Black fruit, a layer of spices, some touches of menthol and a mix of cocoa and coffee hints. Long, mineral finish. |
Our personal opinion | The considerable effort devoted to producing Grillo 2014 makes it stand out among the wines from Somontano. An under-the-radar jewel. |
