The producer of some interesting Godello white wines in the DO Valdeorras, Bodegas Joaquín Rebolledo has also pioneered the recovery of indigenous red varieties. Joaquín Rebolledo Tinto Barrica is produced from a blend which includes two of them.
Made principally from Mencía, this Spanish red wine is complemented with Tempranillo, Grenache, and the local grapes Sousón and Brancellao. All of them come from 40 hectares of estate-owned vineyards. The vines are planted in very steep slopes with soils composed of slate, sand and granite.
Carefully harvested, Joaquín Rebolledo Tinto Barrica 2018 was first cold-macerated and then fermented at a temperature of 25ºC with two daily pump-overs. After that, this red wine from Valdeorras was aged for 6 months in new French and American oak barrels.
Finally, it was clarified and stabilized before being bottled.
The red wine Joaquín Rebolledo Barrica has an intense, medium-high cherry-coloured robe with a garnet rim.
This blend of Mencía, Tempranillo, Grenache, Sousón and Brancellao begins showing some elegant aromas of wild berries, with fine wooden notes of menthol and licorice. There are also some toffee, cinnamon and pepper nuances, as well as some mineral undertones.
WIth a meaty body and a slightly unctuous texture, this Galician red wine from Joaquín Rebolledo feels savoury and fresh. Creamy notes of balsam, toasted wood and spices, combined with fresh notes of red berries, orange rind and blackcurrants. Good acidity and long finish with some fruity and toasted remembrances.
