La Zorra is a red wine made by the La Zorra winery in the Sierra de Salamanca. If you're not familiar with that name, you may be interested to know that Sierra de Salamanca is a mountainous region located between Salamanca and Extremadura, in the southern half of Spain, with a winemaking tradition that goes back to Roman times.
As far as wine is concerned, the Sierra de Salamanca has two great qualities: a rich, complex array of soils that go from slate to sandy loam and a diversity of indigenous grapes.
Precisely, La Zorra 2014 is made from two of them: Rufete and Tinto Aragonés, a mutation of the well-known Tempranillo. Coming from more than 70-year-old vines, the grapes were carefully selected before the harvest, handpicked, destemmed and then fermented with indigenous yeasts to preserve its unique character. Malolactic fermentation and ageing took place in American and French medium-toasted oak barrels.
After 12 months, the wine was bottled and aged for a further 4 months before its launching onto the market. This Spanish red wine was not fined before its bottling.
Production limited to 15,998 bottles.
Drink now until 2020+.
Medium cherry robe with a bright ruby rim.
Delicate aromas of sweet spices (vanilla and clove), smokey touches and ripe red fruit. Balsamic notes, undergrowth remembrances and mineral undertones.
Honest and straightforward, the wine displays red fruit and some earthy, forest floor senstions. Firm tannins, noticeable acidity and medium-long finish.
|Our personal opinion||
This wine La Zorra 2014 offers a good chance to know Rufete, an interesting indigenous grape from la Sierra de Salamanca. We recommend that you let the wine breathe in your glass before drinking it. A good pairing with white meat and hotpots.
