Product Description

Belonging to the "Singularities" collection, Les Tallades de Cal Nicolau is produced by the Orto Vins winery, run by the master oenologist Joan Asens.

This exclusive red wine from Montsant is the most singular of the wines that constitute the collection. In fact, one could justifiably say that this Spanish red wine is unlike any other wine in the world.

Why? Because it is a single varietal Picapoll Negre, an extremely rare grape variety indigenous to Catalonia and Southern France.

Moreover, the wine comes from a single, ungrafted, pre-phylloxeric, 0.2 hectare vineyard planted in 1880. Currently, those precious plants are farmed with the utmost care, following strict organic and biodynamic procedures.

This red wine from the DO Montsant was fermented in 500-litre barrels for over a period of 28 days, that is, over a complete lunar cycle.

After that, Les Tallades de Cal Nicolau 2014 was aged for 12 months in French oak barrels and for a further months in the cellar prior to its release.

Finding this wine is a not an easy task. Only 600 (!) bottles produced.

This wine won the Vinari de Bronze 2019 in the Crianza red wine category.

Additional Information

The red wine Les Tallades de Cal Nicolau has a very bright, intense medium cherry-coloured robe with a violet rim.

This red wine by Orto Vins has a nose of an otherworldly purity. Pristine aromas of wild berries, pomegranates and strawberries, along with enticing notes of lilacs, violets, broom, spices and balsam.

This amazing single varietal Picapoll Negre from Montsant is so precise, lively and evocative that leaves one speechless. Crisp acidity, mild tannins and an overall idiosyncratic, different-from-any-other-wine character. Spices, balsam, liquor, flowers and fruit combine in a most harmonious and understated way. This wine by Singularitats d'Orto has a long, subdued, astoundingly dreamy finish.

Our personal opinion

As subtle as the great Pinots from Burgundy, Les Tallades de Cal Nicolau 2014 is magical. A rare jewel.

Parker's WA said that this was the best thing since apple pie.
So I bought it.
Well, it is even better than apple pie.

I bought this wine after reading an enthusiastic review in WA. It was a wise decision. One of the most extraordinary bottles I've ever had.
