Details

A true classic from one of Rioja's best known wineries, Luis Cañas Gran Reserva is the result of a careful selection of over 50-year-old vineyards located in the Rioja Alavesa.

It is made from a traditional blend of Tempranillo and Graciano, selected on site and fermented for about 20 days at controlled temperatures.

Then the wine was transferred into new 70% French and 30% American oak barrels. There, this reserve red wine from Rioja completed malolactic fermentation and was aged for 24 months in the barrels.

Finally, it was further aged for 36 months in bottle before its commercial release.

We suggest that you decant this Rioja Gran Reserva 1 hour before serving the wine.

Right now, Luis Cañas Gran Reserva 2011 is drinking wonderfully. However, it will evolve nicely for 6-8 more years.

Appearance

The wine Luis Cañas Gran Reserva has a nice cherry red colour with a brick red rim.

Nose

Seriously complex and multilayered, this Gran Reserva by Luis Cañas smells of pure, ripe black fruit and red fruit, underscored by a layer of mineral and earthy remembrances. There are also some notes of fine wood and spices, with a touch of leather and some smokey and floral nuances.

Palate

Elegant and silky, this blend of Tempranillo and Graciano by Luis Cañas is well-balanced and delicately warm. The wine shows a great vitality, with lots of ripe fruit, a touch of liquor, remembrances of toast and spices with a balsamic background. The tasty tannins and the crisp acidity certify that it will have a long life. Long and lingering finish with a smokey aftertaste and some mineral notes.

Our personal opinion

Elegantly complex and always precise, Luis Cañas Gran Reserva 2011 will probably become one of our favourite Rioja wines - that is, if it is not already.
