Product Description

This is the second vintage of Magallanes Optimum, a rare and exclusive Spanish red wine produced by Selección César Muñoz.

A single varietal Tempranillo, it is made from over 100-year-old vines planted in two little plots located in Baños, in the highest area of Ribera del Duero.

After a meticulous harvest, the grapes were fermented in oak vats with indigenous yeasts. Malolactic fermentation took place inside French oak barrels, where this red wine from Ribera del Duero was subsequently aged for 20 months.

Once bottled, Magallanes Optimum 2012 was aged for another 24 months before its market release.

Made only in exceptional vintages. Production is ridiculously low: only 1,200 bottles.

Aerate this reserva red wine at least 1 hour before drinking.

The wine Magallanes Optimum has an intense cherry colour with some garnet glints.


Loads of intensely aromatic red and black fruit amidst a panoply of spicy aromas, namely moka, cocoa, cinnamon, curry and clove. This Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero has an intense toasted and smokey background, with some mineral and earthy undertones which appear from the outset. Magallanes Optimum has an exuberant, complex nose.


The long ageing period clearly shows here, defining the palate -though not suffocating it. Jammy cranberries and bilberries, bold, slightly rugged tannins, and great acidity. This wine from César Muñoz has a long finish with some balsamic and toasted remembrances.

Our personal opinion

Exclusive, complex, bold and age-worthy. Magallanes Optimum 2012 will live for years in our home cellar.
