Details

A varietal Syrah from the DO Méntrida, an area belonging to the Gredos mountain range, Malpaso is a Spanish red wine produced by Bodegas Canopy

It is crafted from vines around 30 years of age, grown in sandy soils at an altitude of 400 metres above sea level.

Harvested by hand and carefully selected, once in the cellar the grapes were cold-soaked prior to alcoholic fermentation. Then this red wine from Méntrida was fermented in stainless steel tanks. After that, it was transferred into 50% new and 50% 2nd year 500-litre French oak barrels.

Finally, Malpaso 2017 completed malolactic fermentation and was aged for 12 months. It was not filtered or clarified prior to its bottling.

17,000 bottles produced.

Nose

This varietal Syrah shows has a very defined character. Black fruit, aromatic herbs, clove, pepper, a dash of chocolate, black olives, wet earth and some mineral remembrances.

Palate

Fresh, gentle and well-structured, this Méntrida red wine of Bodegas Canopy has some ripe tannins and a good acidity. Ripe mulberries, laurel, some smokey nuances, black pepper and undergrowth. Long, delicately sweet finish.

Our personal opinion

Succulent and nuanced, Malpaso 2017 is an utterly enjoyable Crianza red wine from central Spain.

Is this the best Syrah produced in Spain? I honestly think so, at least to my knowledge. The altitude gives the wine a supple character and a great freshness, and the varietal character is very present.
