Let's go back in time. Did you know that Marques de Murrieta was the first commercial winery set up in La Rioja back in 1852? Luciano Murrieta y García-Lemoine, the founder of the winery, brought to Spain the Bordeaux winemaking techniques so he could fulfill his dream of making world-class wines in Spain. Years later, Don Luciano bought the Ygay estate and built the Ygay Castle, from which this Marqués de Murrieta Castillo de Ygay Gran Reserva takes its name. This wine is, therefore, a classic among classics.
Made from an exquisite blend of 81% Tempranillo and 19% Mazuelo (aka Carignan), the grapes come from Pago La Plana, an estate located 485 metres above sea level in the Finca Ygay. Vinified separately, the grapes were destemmed, gently crushed and fermented in stainless steel vats. The must remained in contact with the skins for 11 days, during which the cap was regularly plunged to ensure an homogeneous extraction of flavour and colour compounds.
After that, this Gran Reserva Especial began its ageing process. The Tempranillo was transferred into American oak barrels, while the Mazuelo was put into French oak barrels. Both were aged for a period of 28 months. Then, Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial was blended and aged for a further 6 months in concrete tanks before its bottling. Finally, Marqués de Murrieta Castillo de Ygay Gran Reserva Especial 2009 was aged for a further 3 years in the bottle months in the bottle before its release.
Drink this Rioja Gran Reserva over the next 15-20 years.
Gently decant it 30 minutes before drinking.
The wine Marqués de Murrieta Castillo de Ygay Gran Reserva Especial has a clean, bright, cherry robe with a light brick red hue at the rim.
Exciting, complex aromatic expression. This wine by Marqués de Murrieta suggests some pristine aromas of red and black fruit, alongside some balsamic notes and menthol touches. Notes of exotic spices -clove, Jamaica pepper, nutmeg-, and hints of a great terroir, all wrapped around a refreshing kernel of minerality. Great precision and excellent balance. No blurred lines here.
A wine that is strong as steel and soft as silk. A big, yet extremely gentle structure full of fruit, spices and intriguing notes of charcoal, liquorice, graphite and incense. This Rioja Gran Reserva Especial also shows some ripe, caressing tannins and a firm acidity. Never-ending finish.
