An homage to the cellar masters which built the prestige of bodega Marqués de Riscal since its foundation in the mid-nineteenth century, Marqués de Riscal XR Reserva is made essentially from Tempranillo, complemented with a 5% of Graciano.
The letters XR mean "Extra Reserva". In the past, every time the master cellar found that a particular barrel had a distinctive quality, he would write the letters XR on the head of it. Although the XR wines were never released onto the market, they set the quality standard for the vintage. Started in 1869, the practice of identifying the XR barrels went on for almost a century.
Traditionally vinified, this Spanish red wine was macerated for 12 days and fermented under controlled temperature. After that, it was transferred into American oak barrels and aged for a period of 24 months.
Finally, Marqués de Riscal XR Reserva 2015 was bottled and aged for a further 12 months before hitting the market.
A resounding success, the very first vintage of this elegant and characterful Rioja Red wine will pair well with casseroles, game dishes, cold cuts and cured cheeses.
The red wine Marqués de Riscal XR Reserva is medium ruby with some purplish glints.
The masterful use of American oak puts this blend of Tempranillo and Graciano in a class of its own. Strikingly elegant, with subtle notes of cinnamon, vanilla and black pepper, ripe blackcurrants and damson, and some smokey and balsamic remembrances.
Smooth-textured, nuanced and very refined, with round tannins, good grip and a superb acidity. Despite the long aging period, this wine from bodega Marqués de Riscal is surprisingly easy to drink, and it has an almost exhilarating quality to it. Finish is very long, with a spicy and balsamic note.
