The grapes come from vines 35 years old on average. They are farmed following environmentally friendly practices that exclude the use of chemicals, herbicides and insecticides.
Harvested by hand, the grapes were destemmed and fermented in stainless steel tanks with daily pump-overs and punch-downs.
After 12 days, they underwent malolactic fermentation and were transferred into new and used French, American and Russian oak barrels.
There, the wine was aged for 20 months. During the process, it was drawn off every 5-6 months. Finally, the wine was bottled unclarified and unfiltered, and subsequently aged for a further 24 months in the bottle prior to its release.
Decant this Rioja reserve wine of the Marqués de Vargas winery 1 hour before drinking.
Drink Marqués de Vargas Reserva 2012 from now until 2024.
The red wine Marqués de Vargas Reserva has a dark cherry colour with a ruby rim.
Red and black fruit, delicately nuanced by aromas of spices, cocoa, remembrances of Havanna cigars, cedar and toast, typical of a reserve red wine from Rioja, nuanced by a touch aromatic herbs, liquorice and balsam.
Smooth and silky, this reserve red wine by Bodega Marqués de Vargas exhibits some intense notes of toast and fruit underpinned by aromas of menthol, underbush, exotic spices and cocoa. Well-balanced acidity, mellow tannins and medium, slightly bitter, elegant finish.
|Our personal opinion||
The Spanish red wine Marqués de Vargas Reserva 2012 is a serious wine from Rioja that, despite it is currently drinking wonderfully, has some very good years ahead of it.
