Product Description

Produced by the Martí Fabra winery, Masia Carreras is born in the Catalan-French border, along the southern foothills of the Pyrenees.

The flagship wine of the winery, and one of the most representative wines from L'Empordà, the 2017 vintage of this Spanish red wine is a single varietal Carignan.

The wine is mainly produced from low-yielding grapevines 50 to 80 years of age. The rest of the grapes comes from over 100-year-old grapevines, which were planted soon after phylloxera. Both grow in very poor soils composed of slate and granitic sand. Interestingly, there are documents which prove that Masia Carreras, the wine estate which gives its name to this old-vines Carignan (or Samsó) wine, already existed in the XVth century.

The grapes of this red wine from L'Empordà were manually harvested and traditionally vinified.

After a prolonged maceration with the skins, Masia Carreras 2017 was first aged in old underground concrete vessels for 9 months. After that, it was aged for 12 months in French oak barrels.

Decant this reserva red wine a minimum of 1 hour before drinking.

Additional Information
Additional Information

The wine Masia Carreras has a deep, intense cherry-red colour with a garnet rim.

This red wine by Martí Fabra is deep, terroir-oriented and wonderfully telluric. This enticing old-vines Carignan exhibits lively aromas of ripe black and red fruit, alongisde aromas of spices, cocoa, some herbal nuances, aromas of toast, an earthy layer and an ever present mineral pulse.

Powerful, savoury and uncompromisingly authentic. The fruit of Masia Carreras Negre has a great purity, and it is nuanced with notes of spices, cocoa, underbrush, coffee and minerality that are slowly coming together. Smooth tannins, fresh acidity and long, mineral finish. It is obvious that this Carignan from L'Empordà red wine will considerably improve over the next years.

Our personal opinion

A most faithful portrait of L'Empordà, Masia Carreras 2017 is full of sun, rocks, sea and wind.

very impressed
Full of drama and quite staggering on the palate. The anti Pinot - mind you, in the best possible sense of the term. This will be marvelous in 4-5 years.
