Details

This is a hugely interesting Spanish white wine produced in northern Catalonia, on the southern border of the Pyrenees.

Crafted by the Martí Fabra winery, Masia Carreras Blanc is made from a unique blend of five traditional Empordà varities.

Namely, the composition includes White Carignan, Grey Carignan (a variety different from both Carignan and White Carignan), White Grenache, Grey Grenache (locally called Lledoner Roig or Garnatxa Roja) and Picapoll, all of them planted in vineyards composed of slate soils and constantly swept by Tramuntana, the harsh northern wind typical of the Catalonian-French borderland.

After a careful vinification,  Masia Carreras Blanc 2021 was aged for 12 months in French oak barrels.

This one-of-a-kind Crianza white wine will improve considerably over the next years.

Decant this white wine from L'Empordà a minimum of 30 minutes before drinking.

Appearance

The wine Masia Carreras Blanc is medium yellow with some steely tinges.

Nose

This original blend of White Carignan, Grey Carignan, White Grenache, Grey Grenache and Picapoll opens quite tight. Once it does, though, it shows a stunning aromatic complexity. Seductive notes of lavender, laurel and rosemary that combine with subtle notions of toast, spices, honey and flowers. After a while, this Empordà white wine displays another aromatic layer, namely juicy aromas of citrus and white fruit, nicely underpinned by some dark, rich mineral remembrances.

Palate

Elegant, savoury and complex, this wine from the Martí Fabra winery is nevertheless still in the making. Intense, fresh notes of citrus, flowers and white fruit, underpinned by some wild herbs and a mineral-earthy layer. Very good acidity, deep mineral undertones and long, rich finish.

Our personal opinion

Rather unique, Masia Carreras Blanc 2021 is immensely enjoyable. Think of a southern Rhône white with more inner drama.

Like licking dried, sun-drenched rocks!! Add an eco of honey, rosemary and lime and there you have it. A killer white.

Like a great white wine from the Rhône, but this Masia Carreras costs three times less. Very dry, earthy and mineral, remarkably complex.
