Product Description

Made from 20-year-old vineyards grown in soils with low levels of organic matter, Masia Serra IO is produced in the DO Empordà, Catalonia's northernmost wine region. The vines are constantly exposed to theTramuntana, a strong northern wind which acts like a natural sanitary agent.

A blend of 50% Merlot, 40% Grenache, 10%  Cabernet Franc, the grapes were manually harvested and meticulously selected in the vineyard. Brought to the facilites of the Masia Serra winery, the grapes were destemmed and gently crushed. Fermentation of this red wine from L'Empordà took place in stainless steel tanks, and the solid cape of grape skins was periodically punched down to enhance extraction of colour and aromas.

Finally, Masia Serra IO 2016 was aged in 1st, 2nd and 3rd year French oak barrels for 12 months.

Drink this Spanish red wine over the next 4-5 years.

Incidentally, IO is believed to be the exclamation of joy uttered by the Greek women who worshipped Dionysus, the god of wine.

Additional Information
Additional Information

The Spanish red wine Masia Serra IO has a clean, bright, medium-high, cherry-coloured robe with purple tinges and a violet rim.

This red wine by the Masia Serra winery is very intense, with notes of red berries, Mediterranean undergrowth and some oaky touches. There is an underlying minerality, some spicy touches and remembrances of dry fruit.

Bold and fresh, this Crianza red wine from L'Empordà has some ripe tannins, a tense acidity and a mineral core. Notes of red fruit, mineral undertones and an overall dry, haunting sensation coming from its rugged terroir. Medium-long finish with some mineral, spicy remembrances.

Our personal opinion

The uncommon Masia Serra IO 2016 is utterly Mediterranean and, at the same time, extremely fresh. It has a slightly "wild" quality that we find extremely attractive.

Bone-dry, with a remembrance of liquorice and charcoal, plus the typical Cab pyrazines. Interesting and well priced.
