Details

The prestigious wine Milmanda is a varietal Chardonnay produced by Bodegas Torres. From the beginning, this top-end Spanish white wine was conceived as the winery's response to the great Chardonnay wines from Burgundy and California.

Planted in clayey-limestone soils at an altitude of 500 metres above seal level, in a stunning location of southern Catalonia belonging to the DO Conca de Barberà, the grapevines are located near the Milmanda Castle. A medieval fortress used as a base by Christian knights during the Spanish Reconquista, it currently belongs to Familia Torres.

Somehow reversing the usual vinification process, the wine was fermented in oak barrels. Then, only half of this white wine from Conca de Barberà completed malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks. After a 2-3 week maceration, this white wine fermented in oak was aged for 5 months in French oak barrels.

Finally, Milmanda 2016 was aged for a further 10 months on lees in stainless steel tanks. It was bottled at the beginning of 2018

This is, no question about it, one of Spain's best white wines. Cherished by wine aficionados all over the world, this varietal Chardonnay also has a remarkable ageing potential.

20,000 bottles produced.

Appearance

The white wine Milmanda has an intense golden colour with some bright amber glints.

Nose

This varietal Chardonnay from Conca de Barberà is elegant and refined. French patisserie, fennel, citrus and bone fruit, with a leesy remembrance and a mineral fleck. In contrast with some previous vintages, this Crianza white wine now feels fresher and livelier.

Palate

Fleshy and zesty, but very approachable already, this white wine of Bodega Torres is nuanced and richly textured. Excellent acidity, with a note of lemon tart, a bitter tip and a long, creamy finish. Again, it is clear that the winemaking approach of Bodega Torres has changed, becoming less interventionist and oak-driven.

Our personal opinion

The change in style has certainly benefited Milmanda 2016. Besides being a first-class wine, this Chardonnay now lets terroir speak.

great Chard
Value
Lighter than I remembered. I suppose oak ageing has been reduced -and rightly so, I say. It is now a more crisp and expressive wine. Utterly nice.
