Details

Monasterio de las Viñas Gran Reserva 2005 from Cariñena, Spain, is a benchmark wine of the Grandes Vinos y Viñedos winery in Aragon. This winery has grapevines planted in Goblet systems with ages between 40 and 50 years-old and they are situated between 500 and 800 meters above sea level. The soils of this terroir in Aragon, Sierra de Aguarón, have a layer of 90 cm of rocks and gravel at the surface that is above a layer of clay which is brilliant for retaining water during the summer months. These soils are generally low in nutrients and they are well ventilated by the Cierzo wined, which is a strong and dry wind in Cariñena, Spain.

The harvest process for the Grenache, Tempranillo, and Cariñena (Carignan) grapes in this red wine San José de Aguarón Monasterio de las Viñas Gran Reserva 2010 is realized by hand at the early hours of dawn to prevent the grapes from naturally fermenting in the sun before they reach the winery. Each of the grapes in this coupage receives a separate vinification process that begins as these grapes are gently destemmed and crushed before receiving a 96 hour pre-fermentation cold maceration. Subsequently these grapes are fermented in stainless steel vats for 15 days while remaining in contact with their lees. This lee fermentation process provides for a more complex wine.

After fermentation the wine was crianza aged for 24 months in a unique manner. The Tempranillo and Cariñena grapes were crianza aged in French oak barrels while the Grenache grapes were aged in American oak barrels. Finally, only the best quality barrels were blended together to realize the final coupage and this wine San José de Aguarón gran reserve Monasterio de las Viñas was then aged for an additional 36 months in its bottle before it left the Grandes Vinos y Viñedos winery.

Appearance

San José de Aguarón Gran Reserva 2010 is a bright and clean Spanish red wine with a purple colored body, garnet toned edges, medium high levels of layering, and an abundant tear.

Nose

The nose of this wine Monasterio de Las Viñas presents fragrant red fruits and ripe black plum aromas alongside notes of black pepper, balsamic, cocoa, roasted coffee, vanilla, and smoked cider woods. These are medium intense aromatics.

Palate

This red wine has a pleasant and silky attack onto the palate that is followed by a big and elegant passage. There are silky tannins that are accompanied by a refreshing acidity. This wine has a medium-long aftertaste and retronasal olfaction qualities that push overripe red fruits that are entwined by vanilla, coffee, high roast, and menthols, through the palate and into the nose.

Our personal opinion

Monasterio de las Viñas Gran Reserva 2010 is a Grand Reserve Spanish red wine with a monumental character. San José de Aguarón Grand Reserve 2010 is a classic wine that is very well-balanced, extraordinarily flavorful, and expressive.
