Red Wine Octonia 2012
Availability: In stock
This is a confidential, wholly indigenous, top-notch Spanish red wine from the DO Montsant.
Made from a blend of 50% Grenache, 35% Hairy Grenache and 15% Samsó (Carignan), Octonia is produced by the Serra i Barceló winery.
The 80-year-old vines are planted in two plots located at altitudes between 350 and 500 metres above sea level, and composed of sandy-clayey and limestone soils.
The grapes of this red wine from Montsant were harvested by hand and meticulously selected. Once in the cellar, they were gently destemmed and separately fermented and macerated in 400-litre French oak barrels.
Once alcoholic and malolactic fermentation had been completed, Octonia 2012 was aged on its lees for 16 months in French oak barrels.
Finally, this wine crafted by oenologist Josep Serra, who is also in charge of the Galician winery Godelia, was clarified with egg whites before its bottling.
Drink now until 2025. Decant 1 hour before drinking.
Very limited production.
Appearance | The red wine Octonia has a clean, bright, medium-high garnet-coloured robe with a ruby rim and some bluish tinges. |

Nose | The nose of this wine by the Serra i Barceló winery is complex, nuanced and terroir-driven. Bramble, cranberries and wild violets, very pure and very much alive, punctuated by some balsamic remembrances, a layer of Mediterranean garrigue, and some flecks of graphite, black truffles and charcoal. On the background, faraway suggestions of toast, smoke and tobacco leaves. Really sophisticated. |
Palate | Smooth and medium-bodied, with a lively, luminous character and a remarkable complexity. Octonia from Montsant has a velvety texture, nuanced and richly layered, with a gentle, uplifting tartness, and some mellow tannins. Suggestions of wild berries, mineral undertones, undergrowth and flowers. Long, complex finish. |
Our personal opinion | A rare treat, the scarce Octonia 2012 shows the deepest facet of Mediterranean wine. |
