Details

This is a one-of-a-kind product. A Vino de Finca (single estate wine), Pago de Los Capellanes El Picón is only produced in exceptional vintages.

A tiny, 1.6 hectare plot, Finca El Picón is planted with some Tempranillo vines of exceptional quality. Grown in a soil composed of clay and gravel, the yields are so low that the 2014 vintage had a production below 3,000 bottles.

After a meticulous harvest, the grapes were destemmed and refrigerated for 24 hours. Then they were transferred into French oak vats, where this wine from Ribera del Duero completed alcoholic fermentation with indigenous yeasts and was subsequently macerated for some time. Malolactic fermentation took place in French oak barrels, where Pago de los Capellanes El Picón 2014 was also aged for 22 months -inside a cave located 10 metres below the ground. During the process, this red wine from Ribera del Duero was racked four times. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, it was further aged for 40 months in the bottle before its commercial release.

Decant El Picón de Pago de Los Capellanes 2 hours before drinking.

Properly stored, this wine from Pago de los Capellanes will improve for many years in the bottle.

Appearance

The red wine Pago de los Capellanes El Picón has an intense, bright cherry colour with a garnet rim.

Nose

After some enticing floral and balsamic hints, we smell aromas of blackberries and blackcurrants, combined with spicy touches, a creamy note, and remembrances of coffee, leather and licorice. Graceful and ever-evolving, Pago de Los Capellanes El Picón has some mineral and underbrush overtones.

Palate

Poised and confident, it has a luminous, though bridled energy. This Reserva El Picón transmits a real sense of place, and promises a long life in the bottle. Smooth- textured, this Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero is flawlessly crafted, with unimpeachable balance between fruit and oak. Chiseled tannins, lively acidity and extremely long, complex finish.

Our personal opinion

Complex, elegant, unique. Pago de los Capellanes El Picón 2014 is a magnificent wine.

Very impressive. My 2 remaining bottles, though, will peacefully sleep in my home cellar for at least 10 years...
