Details

This is the second vintage of Pedrabona, the first Spanish red wine produced by Josep Grau Viticultor in the DOQ Priorat.

It is made from low-yielding vineyards around 25 years of age, planted in a 4-hectare estate, called "Lo Panso", located in Bellmunt del Priorat.

The plots, which are organically farmed, are distributed on terraces composed of black and blue slate soils. The typical, uniquely mineral "llicorella" soils that characterize the Priorat region.

The 2018 vintage of this red wine from Priorat is a single varietal Carignan. The grapes were hand-harvested and selected on site and in the cellar. Alcoholic fermentation was carried out in stainless steel tanks, after which the wine was aged for 14 months in a 2,000-litre Stockinger Austrian oak vat. Prior to its bottling, this wine by Josep Grau was not filtered or clarified.

Decant Pedrabona 2018 a minimum of 1 hour before drinking.

Appearance

The red wine Pedrabona has a clean, bright, nice garnet colour with a reddish rim.

Nose

Expressive and lively, this single varietal Carignan shows a depth and focus which are typical of the variety. The aromas of blueberries and bitter cocoa are underpinned by some spicy and balsamic notes, some toasted nuances and a seductive minerality.

Palate

Juicy, precise and sleek, Pedrabona by Josep Grau Viticultor is reminiscent of black fruit, liquorice and violets, with a lively acidity and some smooth tannins. Long finish with some dim mineral overtones and intimations of flowers and roadside herbs.

Our personal opinion

Josep Grau brings a distinctively subtle twist to all of his wines, and he has done an excellent job with Pedrabona 2018. An honest, elegant expression of the Priorat terroir.
