Arguably the best-known wine of the well-known Alejandro Fernández, Pesquera Crianza is also an emblem of modern Ribera del Duero. Just for the record, Pesquera wines rose to stardom in 1982, when Robert Parker compared them to Château Petrus.

As most of Alejandro Fernández's wines, this Spanish red wine is crafted entirely from Tempranillo, the winemaker's most cherished variety.

Traditionally vinified, the grapes used to produce Pesquera Crianza 2017 were fermented without temperature control and macerated for over a long period of time.

Then, the wine was transferred into American oak barrels, where it was aged for 18 months.

Finally, this classic Crianza red wine from Ribera del Duero was aged for a further 6 months in the cellar prior to its release.

Aerate 30 minutes before drinking.

Appearance

The red wine Pesquera Crianza has a medium-high cherry-coloured robe with a purple rim.

Nose

Intense and expressive, this Tempranillo feels quite young. Lively aromas of blue and blackberries, combined with wooden notions of balsam, menthol, coco, sweet spices, cocoa, coffee and toffee. This Ribera del Duero is complex and ever-changing.

Palate

Strong and powerful, this wine by Bodega Tinto Pesquera is still slightly tannic at this moment. Showing a substantial potential for evolution, Tinto Pesquera Crianza exhibits some prominent notes of chocolate, blackcurrants, balsam and spices. Well-structured, with a long, pleasant finish.

Our personal opinion

An all-time classic, Pesquera Crianza 2017 pairs wonderfully with roasted meats. Here is a little secret: the combination of this Ribera del Duero with another Spanish classic, namely a Castilian "cochinillo" (roast suckling pig), is a match made in heaven.

Pesquera seemed to have fallen into terminal decay, but fortunately the trend has been reversed. This wine is full of energy and charm.

Good Pesquera
Value
I learned to appreciate the wines from Ribera del Duero drinking Pesquera by Mr. Alejandro Fernandes. The quality has remained consistent over the years.
