Details

Produced from vines 15 to 50 years of age belonging to the DO Toro, Prima is the entry-level Spanish red wine of Bodega Maurodos-San Román

It is made principally from Tinta de Toro, nuanced by 15% Grenache. The grapes were separately vinified in different kinds of containers, depending on the specificic characteristics of each plot.

Then this red wine from Toro was aged in French and American oak vats and barrels for 12 months. It was bottled in February 2019.

Aerate Prima 2017 30 minutes before drinking.

Appearance

The red wine Prima has a medium-high cherry-coloured robe with a garnet rim.

Nose

This expressive blend of Tinta de Toro & Grenache delights us with aromas of blackberries, plums and cranberries combined with notes of flowers, wet undergrowth, dry earth, toast and spices.

Palate

Smoother and fresher than ever, this red wine by Bodega Maurodos has plenty of local character, and at the same time a great drinkability. Spices, blue flowers, aromatic herbs and wild berries. Polished tannins, very good acidity and long finish with some toasted and spicy remembrances.

Our personal opinion

The worthy little brother of the mighty red wine San Román, Prima 2017 is a gentle, sort of Toro-meets-the-Mediterranean red wine.

Great buy. A bold wine, but very honest and well made.

The producers of this winery also craft San Román, which I find the best wine from Toro. I decided to go for the entry-level wine and was not disappointed. Not so big and muscular as the average Toro. Grenache enlivens the wine and makes it delicious.
