Produced by world-class winemaker Raúl Pérez, Ultreia Mencía is a single parcel Spanish red wine made solely from Mencía.
The grapes were sorted from Las Villegas, a tiny plot with sandy soils situated at 580 metres of altitude, in the village of Valtuille de Abajo, DO Bierzo.
Picked by hand between late August and early September, the grapes were whole-bunch fermented in open oak vats with no temperature control, and subsequently macerated for a long period of time (60 to 90 days).
After that, Ultreia Mencía 2019 was aged for 12 months in 2nd year French oak barrels. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Terroir-bound and elegant, this Crianza red wine shows again the magic touch of its renowned creator.
The red wine Ultreia Mencía is pale purple with some violet tinges.
This varietal Mencía opens with some forest-floor remembrances, slowly evolving into wild berries, flowers and citrus, with some mineral remembrances and dim spicy notes.
Crisp, yummy and apparently effortless, like all the wines of Raúl Pérez. Deeply mineral, with an excellent acidity and some lively tannins. Long finish with some berryish and floral remembrances.
